Explore Earth’s inner core, outer core, mantle and crust in a 3D quarter cutaway. Compare layer sizes and learn what is solid, liquid and slowly flowing.
Look beneath Earth’s surface to compare its thin crust, thick rocky mantle, liquid outer core and solid inner core. Select layers to explore their composition and representative radii.
Earth’s mantle is mostly solid silicate rock that flows over geological time. Its outer core is liquid iron-rich metal, while the inner core is solid. The crust varies greatly in thickness; this spherical view uses an average boundary.
The layers are drawn on the same radial scale. Textures, colours and accelerated motion explain materials and processes; they are not resolved images or measured flow maps of the interior.
