Inside the Moon

Explore a 3D cutaway of the Moon, from its rocky crust and mantle to its small core. Compare approximate layers inferred from lunar observations.

A quarter cutaway reveals the Moon’s crust, mantle, modelled partial-melt region and small iron-rich core. Select each layer for its representative radius and explanation.

How we infer the lunar interior

Seismic, gravity and rotation measurements constrain the Moon’s interior. Core dimensions and the extent of partially molten material remain uncertain; the boundaries shown here are representative spherical averages.

Real scale, illustrative materials

Layer sizes share the Moon’s scale. The rock and metal appearance is illustrative, and animated flow is accelerated. The modern Moon does not have a global magma ocean.
